The Matjestage are based on over 450 years of herring fishing tradition in Emden. This provided many families with their daily wage and bread. In 1969, the East Frisian herring fishery was relocated to Bremerhaven. For this reason, the Emden city fathers decided to commemorate the old tradition with the Matjesfest.
Many traditional ships from Germany and abroad will moor in the inland harbour and Ratsdelft on these days and bring a touch of the long-gone seafaring romance back to the city. In the evenings, various live bands will provide entertainment and add to the fun of strolling around the festival site.
